Jo&isalovebooks had the pleasure of interviewing Author Kate Benson.
What or Who inspired you to start writing?
I’m not really sure I can put my finger on what it was that inspired me to start writing altogether. I think the combination of being a natural book lover/storyteller and living in the country when I was a kid definitely helped me look for ways to both express and entertain myself!
When I started writing my books, the inspiration came from my characters. I’m one of those crazies who will openly admit to the voices in my head 😉 The Promise Series characters started telling me their story in pieces a few months before I began writing it and after having dealt with a serious case of writer’s block, I wasn’t having it. Once they made it clear they had no intention of leaving me, their little whispers evolved into screaming until I could no longer resist them. I’ve never regretted it for a second!
My parents and grandmother were my first ever readers and were supportive from day one. My husband has done an amazing job of taking the reins as my number one fan, though and he lends a lot of inspiration toward my leading men. There’s a little piece of us in every book. He’s pretty epic 😉
How long have you been writing?
I started writing poetry when I was very young, I’d guess around five? When I was about twelve, I started exploring short stories. I didn’t start writing my first full-length book until The Promise, which I self-published at the age of thirty three.
What Genre do you write?
Although I’ve got three series and more on the way, each one is different (one contemporary, one erotic and one new adult). That being said, they’re all based in romance. I’m a sucker for a great love story 😉
What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?
Two things: 1) Don’t give up! It can be so scary and intimidating to put yourself out there. Writing has a way of making you feel vulnerable like nothing else can. However, I believe your characters and your stories choose you. If you’re lucky enough to have a character choose you, don’t let fear stand in the way of telling that story! You’ve been given a gift! Use it!
2) Be nice. Whether it’s your readers, other authors or a blog/page, if someone contacts you regarding your work, be nice to them! There are millions of other books they could be reading, but they took the time to ask about yours. Appreciate that 🙂
Can you set the scene of your writing cave?
It was a dark and stormy night. A Tuesday I believe… The shutters on the window facing the north bellowed with protest as the wind rattled against them…
No, seriously, I have a desk in my living room. It’s covered in a combination of pictures of my parents/family and my husband along with awesome things I’ve accumulated from cover shoots (Sophie’s bracelet, Ana’s ring, Jack’s dogtags, Addie’s Homer Simpson Rubix Cube, etc) and gifts my amazing readers have sent me. There’s a Go Baby! coffee cup, Thor bobble-heads, a Promise Series inspired candy dish, a silver glitter skull, nail polish, a guitar pick my brother gave me and a shooter of spiced rum for literary emergencies.
Tell us something none of your readers know about you.
That’s a tough one! I’m a pretty open person, so I’m not sure! I’ll give you a couple fun facts 😉
I collect guitar picks, I’m obsessed with Freddie Mercury, I’m an aspiring archer and have an odd fascination with serial killer history. I’ll also watch/read anything related to John F. Kennedy and the mob. I’m also a huge animal lover and was once a member of a paranormal investigation group.
Are you working on anything at the moment you would like to tell us about?
I’m working on lots of stuff right now! In addition to book six in The Promise Series, I’m working on multiple books, one of which is called Beyond the Pine. It’s a dark romance surrounding a rogue biker and a nurse who has been raised in a private religious community/compound. When their paths cross, both of them are forced to take a closer look at their lives and beliefs as temptation grows between them.
I can’t say much about the other things I’m working on yet, but I will tell you that included in my list of current WIP’s, there is a PR and a romantic suspense novel.
What do you think you’d be doing now if you hadn’t became a writer?
I don’t really know. I’ve always just wanted to write, so I can’t think of anything, aside from rockstar or personal body-oiler for The Hemsworth’s and David Gandy, that I would love this much. 😉
Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
In ten years, I want to be writing full-time. I want to be able to travel for signings and meet my readers. I want to have met (and continue to meet) amazing characters with stories I can’t wait to write and fall in love with. I want to do everything I’ve been dreaming of since I was five and first decided I wanted to write a book 🙂
Is there any Genre you wouldn’t write?
I don’t think anything is really off limits, but I’m not sure how well I’d do writing anything like a western or historical romance. Not that I can’t appreciate them, simply that I’m not familiar enough with that particular genre. That being said, if a story comes to me, I will write it 🙂
Have you or would you co write?
I’ve dabbled 😉 I’d love to do more!!
Do you like to read? If yes, what kind of books grab your attention?
I LOVE reading! Doesn’t every author? 😉
I stick mostly to romance and I love a strong female lead. I’m also a sucker for a bad boy with a filthy mouth and a soft heart. In addition to things like that, though, I love mystery, suspense and paranormal romance. I love romances that have a dark twist to them and I love suspense books that keep me guessing until the last page. Right now, I’m reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn *I’m pretty sure I’m the last person on the planet to read it lol* and I’m really enjoying it.
Some of my favorite authors are John Grisham, Alice Walker, Harlan Coben, Nick Sparks (I like to pretend we’re friends and it’s cool for me to call him Nick lol), Teresa Mummert, Callie Hart’s Blood and Roses Series was amazing. I just read two new-to-me authors (ML Steinbrunn and Sara Mack) and I loved their stuff! Belinda Boring is one of my favorite PR authors and I also really enjoyed HP Mallory’s PR series’. … I could seriously go on forever!!
What do you most like doing in your spare time?
I really love anything comic book related, especially Marvel (#StansTheMan) so I’m always down to spend a night stretched out on the couch watching things like that with my husband. I also really love to hike (I go at least once a week) and I’m a huge music lover. I also love to cook, so at least two nights a week, I put my headphones in, drink wine and dance in my kitchen while I cook supper for me and my husband. Pair that with a bonfire afterwards and I’m a happy girl 😉
Your stuck on a train in the middle of nowhere, there’s only one other passenger on the train.
Who would you love that passenger to be and why?
My husband. Even if I picked a celebrity or someone I admire, it wouldn’t be the same if I couldn’t share it with him and I’d be wishing he was with me the whole time anyway. It might sound cheesy, but I warned you! I’m a sucker for a great love story and ours just happens to be my favorite 😉
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you so much to Jo and Isa for featuring me and for your support! It really means the world to me!
If any of my readers see this, thank you so much for your support and for taking the time to read my books! Every single message, comment, review, one-click… all of it means so much to me! I’ll never be able to thank you enough for helping the little girl who still lives deep inside my heart achieve her dreams ❤
Last, I want to mention that all of my titles are now available to read for free on Kindle Unlimited. If you decide to try one of my books, thank you in advance and I truly hope you love it as much as I loved writing them!
Be excellent to each other!
I grew up in Texas and moved to Florida when I met the love of my life 14 years ago. I wrote my first poem when I was five and it was about my love affair with pickles. I still love pickles but I like to think my writing has grown since then. I absolutely adore anything to do with books whether it’s writing them or devouring them in one sitting. I live on music, love, and sweet tea. I am known for my silly but blunt personality. I’ve been lucky enough to find the love of my life, marry him and now we’re working on our happily ever after. He inspires me in everything I do, but especially in telling love stories. I’m an ordinary girl living an extraordinary love and I’m so happy I get to share it with the world through my writing.
